Whitby Abbey is Cultural Heritage site, a Grade I listed building managed by English Heritage that dates from before the Norman Conquest, allegedly it was the site of a Roman settlement, it has been witness to so much history, and it turn, it has inspired great stories.
As well as an active port with Withby Harbour, it has spent a long time as a seafront destination, and this mixture meant Bram Stoker visited and was inspired by the history of the ancient ruins of the abbey and of a shipwreck a few years before into writing the haunting tale of the doomed ship Demeter.
over its many centuries it has been inspired some great art, its beautiful and mysterious profile rising over the city has defied thousands to try and capture it, and to learn more about it.
We look into its history its use over the centuries and what does henry viii has to do with it.
