When was the last time you replaced the anodes or zincs on your outboard or sterndrive motor? They should be replaced when around half gone, which is usually every year. Outboards and sterndrives usually come with several sacrificial anodes or zincs, which protect important metals, like the prop or outdrive, from galvanic corrosion. It's important that boat owners know where the boat anodes or zincs are located and how to replace them. While it's a critical part of maintenance, the process of replacing anodes and zincs is an easy DIY project. If you can turn a wrench, you can change your boat's anodes -- and save hundreds of dollars!
Here's why you should regularly replace outboard anodes: Boats contain a lot of different metals, so when those are submerged in water, your boat essentially becomes one big battery! That energy created isn't enough to do anything useful, BUT one of those dissimilar metals will hold a negative charge in relation to, say, the stainless-steel prop. Like a household battery, the anodic metal will be destroyed in the process of generating electricity – aka galvanic corrosion. In a disposable battery, this is OK. On a boat, the used-up metal might be an expensive bronze propeller or an aluminum outdrive.
In this video we'll show you where to find the outboard anodes on your boat's outboard or sterndrive and how to replace them.
