U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told delegates at the COP25 climate change summit that the US was still in the fight against climate change, despite President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the 2015 agreement.
Pelosi also presented a delegation of more than a dozen members of Congress who accompanied her to Spain.
The congressional group is separate from the official US delegation at the conference, which is led by Ambassador Marcia Bernicat, a senior State Department official.
The United States technically remains a member of the Paris accord until 4 November 2020.
Also speaking at the summit, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said children would not be able to forgive their elders if society failed to deal with climate change.
Organizers expect around 29,000 visitors during the December 2-13 meeting, including around 50 heads of state and government for Monday's opening session.
