Mining giant Anglo American has announced the sale of three platinum mines in South Africa to Sibanye Gold for 4.5 billion rand.
Sibanye is the country's biggest gold producer. The sale comes as the platinum industry struggles with falling prices and industrial unrest. Two years ago Amplats wanted to close the mines and announced that 14 thousand jobs could be lost. Government threatened to revoke it's licence. It seems that Sibanye now sees value in buying when the platinum price is low - and waiting for things to turn around.
Amplats meanwhile will focus on mechanised mines that weren't as hard hit by last years strike action.
