(28 Sep 2016) More than 2,000 residents of the Greek island of Chios took to the streets on Wednesday in a protest against how the refugee crisis was being managed by local authorities.
Some complained that the refugee camp on their island has become overcrowded and was impacting on crime levels, tourism and the local economy.
More than 60,000 migrants remain trapped in Greece after Balkan countries began restricting crossings in early 2016 before shutting them completely in March.
More than 13,000 are now stranded on Greek islands facing an uncertain future.
About 3,700 are on Chios, where there is provision for just 1,100 spots.
Under an agreement between the European Union and Turkey, anyone arriving on the Greek islands from Turkey on or after March 20 would be held there and face being returned to Turkey unless they successfully apply for asylum in Greece.
Refugees must apply for admissibility to the asylum system in a procedure that can take months, and some refugees have said their second interviews were not scheduled until January 2017.
