A small implant attachment is known as an abutment, which acts as a cap for the implant. The function of an abutment is to be the connector between the implant and the crown. The implant located in the bone is connected to the crown with the help of this part of the implant, called an abutment, which juts out from the gum.
An abutment is screwed onto the implant with the help of an abutment fixation screw. The implant usually located in the bone, is first held by tweezers, the crown is then cemented onto the abutment. In earlier days, dentist used to use stick connections between an implant and an abutment. However, with the advancements in dentistry, dentists have started using cone connections between an implant and an abutment.
An abutment can be made either from titanium or ceramic. Nowadays even a zirconium abutment has become popular.
A zirconium abutment is usually used in the frontal teeth because they are more aesthetically pleasant. The cheaper and more stable abutment made up of titanium is used in the side teeth area as the chewing pressures are far greater towards the jaw bones and yet, they are usually not visible from the front.
The choice of the material for the abutment lies to some extent, with the patient and he, in turn, decides upon the same depending on his pocket.
