In this video, I explain rational choice theory as it is used in sociology and criminology. The rational choice perspective has been very influential, not only to explain crime and criminal behavior, but also in political science, international relations, public administration, economics, public policy, and more generally the social sciences. Some of the most often used real life examples of applications of rational choice theory are situational crime prevention techniques.
Modern rational choice theory as used in criminology is typically based on the work by Cornish and Clarke, who published the book “The reasoning criminal” in 1986. The rational choice perspective is considered to be part of opportunity theory, which focuses on crime and victimization.
