On a beautiful late summer day in 1935, an elegant eight cylinder Packard purrs gently along the curving road around Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. There are three people in the car: the driver, his female passenger and a suited man in the rear - suddenly the driver is distracted and the car is involved in a terrible crash.
After clambering out of the wreckage and rushing to his wife, who lies motionless on the side of the lake, he tries in vain to resuscitate her.
This tragic accident sent a whole nation in the morning for its beloved Queen. Decades later the car still remains at the bottom of the lake where it was deliberately put there by the Swiss government, shortly after the tragedy.
Its location remains a secret…and the Swiss government wants to keep it that way.
Shortly after making this video I went to visit the chapel/memorial of Queen Astrid which is situated at the original crash site – also on this journey I went to visit Mark Twain’s most favourite place upon the Earth.
