(11 Feb 2020) Crowds of people celebrated in the streets of New Delhi on Tuesday as early indications suggest the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will win a majority of seats in the city's legislative elections.
With the counting of votes nearing completion the AAP had won 28 seats and was leading in another 35 of the 70 constituencies, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won two seats and was leading in another five, the Election Commission said.
Addressing the crowds, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal said voters in the capital had 'given birth to a new brand of politics'.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist BJP party campaigned vigorously in an attempt to unseat the AAP and capture power in New Delhi.
The BJP appealed to majority Hindus by focusing on national issues such as the citizenship law. These triggered widespread protests and 23 people were killed in clashes between police and protesters in December.
The AAP is known as the "common man's" party and had policies focused on fixing state-run schools and providing cheap electricity, free health care and bus transport for women during its five years in power.
The result is seen as a referendum on Modi's policies.
The Congress party, led by Sonia Gandhi, was unlikely to win any seats.
Full results are expected later Tuesday.
