Hashimoto's is the number one most common cause of thyroid disease in developed countries and yet it has very few approved treatments.

Pretty much the only one that doctors know and care about is levothyroxine.

The good news is that there are plenty of emerging treatments beyond levothyroxine so if you are one of the millions that continue to suffer despite taking your thyroid medication, there's no reason to get down.

Let's take a look at these emerging treatments to see which (if any) should be considered:

1. Levothyroxine alternatives.

There are 2 new levothyroxine alternatives available, and 1 new form of NDT, that has been released in the last few years:

- Tirosint
- Tirosint-sol
- Adthyza

All three of these options work better than levothyroxine and can be considered if you feel it's not working for you.

2. Off-label prescription medications.

Within this group, we have the following:
- Metformin
- Low-dose naltrexone
- Steroids
- And immunosuppressants

Of those listed, really only metformin and low-dose naltrexone are worth looking into.

3. Surgical options.

Some doctors are looking into surgical removal of the thyroid in severe cases of Hashimoto's but I would only look into this option as a last resort.

4. Natural treatments.

These natural options can be more powerful than thyroid medication for certain individuals:

- Red light therapy
- Diet
- Supplements (Nigella sativa, selenium, and inositol)
