BREWSTER – At about 10:00AM today, Brewster Police dispatched an officer to look into reports of a 60 pound brown pig running down Route 137 in their town.
The following video shows everyone who attempted to capture the wayward pig, including the pigs owner, another news photographer, and officers from the Brewster and Harwich police departments (I think the officer from Brewster was also animal control…)
HN learned the pig has been on the run since Sunday.
HN also learned the young pig recently had his testicles removed. Which may actually make him less aggressive… and much less of danger to himself and the community.
It still remains uncertain why the pig refuses to return home. (But if I had one guess…)
The owner brought along her pig bell, which is sometimes attached to her dog… and is said to be very helpful in flushing the little guy out when the dog chases him into cover…
When HN arrived, everyone was milling around in the area of the most recent sighting. We were there for about 15 minutes without any sign of the pig.
But then suddenly, the other photographer spotted something watching us…
We had been regrouping in some random driveway, and the pig quietly walked out into the open on a dirt road just footsteps away from us. He then stared right at us for a brief period, as if to dare us, “catch me if you can!”
We just stood there in disbelief. Was this little pig mocking us?
He then made his move.
As he took off running toward some brush, the police officers went left in an effort to out flank him. The owner took to the right. The Cape Cod Times photographer and I went directly in…
We instantly lost the little guy for a moment as the others circled around, converging in from both flanks, in some sort of instinctive pincer maneuver…
It was then the photographer from the Times flushed him out from behind a shed. We almost had him. But the little guy was too clever, taking full advantage of a momentary gap in our right flank. The chase was on again…
HN NOTE: We did our best, but the pig was too much. At the time of this report, the little swine remains at large in the Route 137 and Freeman’s Way area of Brewster.
Also, you’ll hear some distinct huffing and puffing in this video. That was me. And to be fair, I’m recently coming off a bad cold… plus I didn’t have my directional mic…
I know, excuses, excuses…
But in our defense, the little pig was a wily and determined little feller. We simply were no match for the little barnyard beast!
In all the excitement, I didn’t have much time to gather too many details, like the pig’s name, etc… but I will provide updates as they become available :)
I have a feeling we haven’t seen the last of this pig, as the story definitely “has legs…”
