Polar just launched their new Polar Vantage M3, which seems to be the best of all worlds in terms of Polar’s watch offering. This 400 dollar Vantage M3 shares the same software platform and sensor set as the high-end 600 dollar Vantage V3 and 750 dollar Grit X2 Pro This means the Vantage M3 basically offers all the same features as these more expensive models, but at a better price. It is also lighter at just 53 grams with the wristband and is more compact, measuring 44mm in diameter versus the almost 49mm of the Vantage V3 and Grit X2 Pro. But this smaller size and lower weight is actually an advantage in my opinion, since it likely stays on your wrists better, thereby potentially improving heart rate tracking performance. And as a bonus it will also look better on my relatively narrow wrists, which will be true for some of you as well. But of course we will test in this video whether or not those things are the case, as part of my initial review of the Polar Vantage M3. We will test the heart rate tracking during 5 types of exercise, do an initial test of the sleep stage tracking and look at the quality of some GPS tracks. By the way, for those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. Now, the Vantage M3 is aimed at multisport athletes, and given the size is both suitable for men and women. Polar also included some features specifically for women, like menstrual cycle tracking.
The display is a significant upgrade from the Vantage M2, with the Vantage M3 featuring a 1.28-inch AMOLED touchscreen with Gorilla Glass 3. Similar to Polar’s more high-end models, the M3 has Polar's Elixir biosensing technology that offers optical heart rate measurements, wrist-ECG, oxygen saturation, and nightly skin temperature tracking, aiming to provide comprehensive health insights. The M3 has dual-frequency GPS, and offline maps, which should hopefully make it suitable for all sorts of outside activities, and the built-in barometer will also help track altitude, incline, decline, ascent and descent. But of course I’ll also be testing the GPS tracking, and in this video we will take a first stab at that. The M3 supports turn-by-turn guidance via Komoot and Strava Routes, which does require a Strava Premium subscription. In terms of battery life, the M3 is pretty OK, though not quite as good as the Vantage V3 and Grit X2 Pro. The Vantage M3 offers up to 30 hours in performance training mode, 70 hours in eco training mode, and 7 days in smartwatch mode. Now, 70 hours in eco training mode sounds pretty good, but this actually disables heart rate tracking, so I would not really use this feature myself. Just for comparison, the Grit X2 Pro lasts for 43 h in performance training mode and 10 days in smartwatch mode.
