(24 Oct 2019) Tens of thousands of people marched through the West African state of Guinea on Thursday in protest at President Alpha Condé's bid to seek another term in office.
Several thousand police and gendarmes were deployed but the march was peaceful, unlike last week's smaller protests in which at least nine people were killed.
Most demonstrators wore red shirts bearing the acronym for the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution, the coalition of civil society and political groups that organised the marches.
Its leaders were given prison sentences Tuesday for insurrection and disturbing the public peace.
Cellou Dalein Diallo, leader of the main political opposition party Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea, said the protests woudl continue until Conde changed his mind about seeking a third term.
President Condé's mandate ends in December 2020 but he is seeking a referendum to allow him to serve a third term.
Condé, who's 81, was elected to a five-year term in 2010 in the country's first democratic transition of power since independence from France in 1958.
He was re-elected in 2015.
