A committee tasked with studying alleged foreign interference in Canada's last two elections heard from prime minister Justin Trudeau's chief of staff on Friday. Katie Telford testified at the Procedure and House Affairs committee to talk about what she knows about Chinese meddling in the 2019 and 2021 elections.
Much of Telford’s testimony was framed around security of information laws she could not publicly comment on whether Trudeau and his staff and ministers were briefed on details of intelligence that have been reported on by Global News and the Globe and Mail.
Telford disputed Global News’ reporting from a November story, derived from national security sources, alleging that the Chinese consulate funnelled money through proxies to federal candidates in the 2019 election.
Telford acknowledged, however, “it is quite possible” the prime minister was briefed on a Chinese election interference scheme in January 2022.
