On 20 June 1999, ITN's Michael Brunson reported on the unsteady appearance of Russian President Boris Yeltsin at that year's G8 conference in Cologne. During his eight years in office, Yeltsin's alcholism and wider health was a regular subject of media scutiny, his drunkenness having caused a number of diplomatic incidents. Yeltsin's worsening health reportedly led the Russian President to give up heavy drinking in 1996. According to former Russian deputy prime minister Boris Nemtsov, however, continuing instances of bizarre public behaviour were caused by "strong drugs" prescribed to him by Kremlin doctors, which were incompatible even with a small amount of alcohol.
