One of the pieces from Mercadante's "Caritea, regina di Spagna" which quickly became popular was a military chorus "Aspra del militar" or, to be more precise, a part of it "Chi per la patria muor, vissuto e assai", a classical and a particularly elegant military hymn, dealing with the traditional glories of the military.
