To celebrate 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence, Bengal Foundation organised Srijone O Shekore, a 5-day arts festival, from 14 to 18 December 2021, at Bengal Shilpalay, Dhaka. Supported by BRAC Bank, the festival featured performing arts, visual art, crafts, books, film, readings, and events for children. Over 300 singers-musicians-dancers-craftspersons-artists performed on stage and engaged in various kinds of programming at the festival, over the five days.
Set in the Kirtan style, the song Ekbar tora ma boliya was composed by Rabindranath Tagore in 1886 for a prayer meeting of the Brahmo Samaj. Tagore himself presented the song at the meeting, as a call to unify the three factions of the Samaj. The song later became popular in the patriotic genre. A rich and compelling rendition of Ekbar tora ma boliya was performed by Laisa Ahmed Lisa at Ganer Jhornatolay on the third day of the Srijone O Shekore arts festival. The artist was accompanied on stage by Enamul Haque Omar on the Tabla, Asit Biswas in the Esraj and Robins in the keyboard.
Laisa Ahmed Lisa began her training in music under the guidance of her father Dr Mafiz Uddin Ahmed. She went on to learn the disciplines of classical music from Ustad Rabiul Hossain and Pandit Amaresh Roy Chowdhury at Rajshahi. Later, her prowess in Rabindra Sangeet flourished under the worthy guidance of Prof Ghulam Murshid, Waheedul Haque and Sanjida Khatun. She received the Rabindra Sangeet Sammilan Parishad awards, in the eighties. In 2007, she received the City Cell-Channel-i award. Lisa is the head of the Rabindra Sangeet department at Chhayanaut Sangeet Bidyayatan, Dhaka, and is affiliated with the Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Sammilan Parishad. She has toured in Bangladesh and abroad and has released several albums until date. Lisa holds a Ph.D, and is currently Professor and Chair of the department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Jagannath University, Dhaka.
