Kia’s 2017 Forte got a refresh that improves its looks, particularly up front, and adds a new sport trim (the S) as well as more safety tech and a few more options. A new engine improves efficiency, too, making the new Forte a well-rounded competitor in the hyper-competitive compact sedan segment. Kia keeps starting prices low by making a number of expected features extra-cost options, but even with those additions, the Forte provides a cost-effective alternative to the Civic, Focus, Jetta, and Mazda3.
The Forte’s new engine is an updated version of the 2.0-liter inline four that’s been used in other Kia and Hyundai cars for about 5 years. It has a bit more power than the previous one, with 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque, but it gets mileage ratings of 29 mpg city and 38 highway, 3 mpg better in the city and 1 better on the highway than last year’s version.
