#Sinus venosus atrial septal defect (SVASD) is a rare congenital heart disease that occurs in adults. It allows blood to flow from the systemic to the pulmonary circulation.
SVASDs are located at the posterior aspect of the interatrial septum, close to the junction of the superior or inferior vena cava with the right atrium. They account for 5%–10% of all atrial septal defects (ASDs).
SVASDs are present at birth. The age at presentation depends on the size of the left-to-right shunt. Atrial septal defects in infancy are usually asymptomatic.
Symptoms of SVASDs include:
Easy fatigability
Dyspnea
Arrhythmias
Decrease in exercise tolerance
SVASDs are treated with open-heart surgery. This type of surgery involves an incision through the chest wall to access the heart directly. Surgeons use patches to close the hole.
SVASDs differ from secundum ASDs by their atrial septal location and their association with anomalous pulmonary venous connection (APVC).
