The new Junior Speciale is Alfa Romeo's make or break car. If it doesn't sell in big numbers, the brand won't meet UK EV mandate targets, meaning it could be slapped with hefty government fines. We loved the Junior Veloce last year, but the Junior that matters for Alfa's future is this £35,695 one. It can't fail.

Things get off to a promising start, because that price (which ranks this Speciale above the entry-level £33,895 Junior Elettrica) undercuts the Alfa's brother from another mother, the Peugeot E-2008, by a healthy margin. The design of the Speciale is also near identical to the hot looking Veloce, which adds to the appeal. But the Junior lacks rear legroom and the boot is only about average for the class.

What will swing buyers towards this version of the Junior then? If the blend of Alfa specialness, range and day-to-day functionality is right, the Speciale could be a real winner in the crossover class.
