Alan Kolok’s community engagement and research activities focus on the water quality of Midwestern rivers and streams. With respect to community engagement, he initiated What’s in your Watershed Day in 2011, a series of events in which citizen scientists collect water quality information from streams and rivers in their communities. The citizens can then use an online data management system to both collect and retrieve data of local importance.
With respect to research, Kolok manages a toxicology laboratory as well as the Elkhorn River Research Station. Research at the Station deals with agrichemical contamination of water and sediment.
