In the lead-up to Indonesia's 79th birthday, the pace of construction of the nation's future capital city continues to accelerate. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has been heavily pushing Nusantara's debut, arriving in the new city in style with a motorcycle gang of Indonesian influencers. Business is booming in the areas surrounding Nusantara as newcomers flock to East Kalimantan.
Concerns from locals, however, are as present as ever. As the new city rises, classic metropolitan problems are creeping up. Reports of increasing criminality are more commonplace, as well as environmental concerns linked with the acceleration of the Nusantara project.
