The stage is set for a big-bang farm relief package. Finance minister Arun Jaitley has made it clear that the interim budget, which will be presented on February first, will have incentives for farmers who are facing acute financial problems. Jaitley's statement doesn't come as a surprise considering the electoral setback the BJP faced in the Hindi heartland recently. ET NOW was the first report that the Modi Govt is working on a plan for a Rs 10,000 payout to each farm family across the country. An alternative proposal is a subsidy payment of Rs 4000 for each acre of cultivable land. Although the farm bailout will have a huge bearing on the fisc, with elections just around the corner, the Govt doesn't have much of an option. The big farm bailout and what it means for the economy and politics, that's what Supriya Shrinate is discussing on this India Development Debate.
