From his Op. 18 String Sextet, Brahms (1833-1897) arranged this movement for piano and dedicated it to Clara Schumann (1819-1896). The String Sextet was published in 1860.

Cyprien Katsaris (b. 1951) recorded this piece, along with Brahms' 3rd piano sonata and 2 rhapsodies in October 1988.

Some viewers may recognize this from an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation ("Sarek".) The original String Sextet version was used, although the episode seemed to imply that the music was by Mozart.
