Let’s be fair, the internal mic of the GoPro Hero 7 sucks and the handling noise is horrible and often noneditable. So I got myself the Edutige ETM-001 (~ $27) and Zoom H1n (~ $130) and decided to compare them. I do know however that they aren’t equal competitors in this case. The H1n is pretty much a good studio device but is far less convenient to carry around (especially mounted like that). Plus, it’s too sensitive and needs this shock mount which is bigger than the recorder itself and also this gigantic wind muff… As for the ETM-001, it is so tiny that can it even be taken seriously? Is it even capable of sounding more or less similar to the H1n?
I’ve been looking for an optimal mic solution for field recording so I could stop carrying tons of stuff with me when I’m traveling. So, is the ETM-001 finally IT? Or is the H1n still a better option? I did a few tests in different environments and here are the results. As always, I’d love to know what you think and I’d appreciate your like! Use headphones for best experience.
P.S. Make sure you also get the GoPro audio adaptor for another $50 to be able to connect the ETM-001 to your camera. Otherwise it just won’t work.
Pay attention to the interference in the right ear at 06:01 This is what sometimes happens to the H1n in the city and it never does in the countryside. This is definitely something to keep in mind as it may spoil your recording greatly. I already had such experience many times and I’m tired of it. To sum up, I think the Edutige ETM-001 is a great mic and I’ll definitely be using it a lot now. What you might want to get is an L-shaped adapter (like I’ve got in this vid) so the mic is directed more towards what you’re filming. The H1n is also amazing, but too sensitive to carry around. Plus, the interference issue and the overal bulkiness of the rig.
