Access to fish has become a major challenge for Yemeni fisherfolks. Most fishermen in Shoqrah District of Abyan Governorate in Yemen used to depend on fishing from nearby coastal waters, but fish stocks have steadily decreased in recent decades due to overfishing, climate change, and pollution. Now, fishermen have to sail long, risky journeys with inadequate equipment to catch enough fish to sell in the market. This is likely to have serious implications on the livelihoods and food security of the households depending on the sale of fish products.
With funding from the European Union (EU), CARE works to revitalize the fishing sector in Yemen by training fishermen in Shoqrah on the best fishing practices. This includes maintaining the quality of fish at the catch stage, proper handling procedures on board, and maintenance of boat engines. Applying meticulous hygiene and cold storage procedures throughout fishing can ensure better fish quality and selling price. In addition, the project is training women in weaving fishing nets and handicrafts from palm leaves.
