A trip to the City of Southend Pier & Railway - 21st April 2022. Music used to overcome the noise of the blustery wind on the pier. The last time I was here was 35 years ago (1987). As you might expect, like everywhere else, there have been a lot of changes. The tragic murder of the local MP Sir David Amess, still fresh in the minds of many. He was a British politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Southend West from 1997 until his murder in 2021. The subsequent agreement that Southend should become a city was as a result of his campaigning for this status.
A new train on the pier railway - which is now electric, the first one named Sir David Amess. Back in their green and cream livery that I remember as a child.
My grateful thanks to Chris Veitch for providing some additional recent footage and some stills to the mix.
Several music tracks:
Spirit of Fire by Jesse Gallagher
Bits & Pieces - Dave Clark Five (As a young teenager I thought the beat and thumping of the boots on stage matched that of the sound from trains on the track)
