Homotherium, also known as the Scimitar-Toothed cat, was a genus of Machairodontine Felid native to Africa, Eurasia and the Americas. First appearing in the fossil record during the Early Pliocene roughly 4 million years ago, this cat possessed elongated forelimbs, blade-like upper canines and semi-retractable claws. Favouring open steppe and plains habitats, Homotherium lived in prides and hunted large megafaunal prey. It was a pursuit hunter, chasing prey to exhaustion then delivering a fatal slashing bite to the throat. The genus became extinct at the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary due to a serious reduction in its preferred mammoth steppe habitat.
