Beijing hit back at Washington’s recent China sanctions by announcing it will revoke visa exemptions for US diplomatic passport holders visiting Hong Kong and Macau. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a press conference on December 10, 2020, that Beijing will also implement reciprocal sanctions against some US officials, members of Congress and their family members. The retaliation came three days after the US announced sanctions targeting 14 vice-chairmen of China’s National People’s Congress. Washington’s latest measures include financial sanctions and a travel ban against Chinese officials deemed responsible for imposing Beijing’s national security law on Hong Kong.
