Today we visit the city of Tarragona, Spain and their classic Tarraco Arena Plaza!
History:
The Tarragona bullring , today known as "Tarraco Arena Plaça" , is a historic modernist-style building built by the local architect Ramón Salas Ricomá and is considered one of the first examples of Modernism in the province of Tarragona. The property occupied its original use until 2006 when the reform initiated by the Provincial Council of Tarragona, owner of the building, made it impossible to continue celebrating bullfights inside, protected by the applicable legislation in Catalonia. The inauguration of the bullring took place with the celebration of a bullfight from the cattle ranch of Antonio Hernández and Félix Gómez, which the right-handed Rafael Molina "Lagartijo" and Salvador Sánchez "Frascuelo " stocked.
The celebration of bullfights in Tarragona is not limited to the current bullring since there is evidence of the organization of bullfights " for the benefit of the wounded " of the Carlist wars in the Tarragona countryside in May 1874. The Tarragona bullring, as a building intended for the celebration of bullfighting shows, was one of the buildings that served as a leisurely venue for the city during the fifties of the 20th century, together with the cinemas or the old state of Nastic Tarragona football. Throughout the history of the Plaza de Tarragona there have been many bullfighters who have participated in the different organized bullfights. The bullfighting fair organized on the occasion of the patron saint festivities of Santa Tecla, in the month of September, attracted for years the main figures and also the main ranches of the brave field. Thus, for example, the inauguration of the bullring - on September 23, 1883 - was attended by the Andalusian bullfighters Rafael Molina "Lagartijo", from Córdoba, and the Granada-born Salvador Sánchez "Frascuelo": Personalities such as Jesulín de Ubrique , Rivera Ordóñez , Serafín Marín or Juan José Padilla , among many others , have passed through this arena . Some of the bullfighters who have taken the alternative in this arena are José López , José Mª Plaza , Julián Calderón El Jato or Rubén Marín . Some bullfighters have also debuted in this square, as in the case of José García García "El Jose" from Granada.
In 2006 , remodeling works began on the arena with an approximate cost of 18 million euros. For this reason, bullfighting was temporarily suspended. After building the dome and all the facilities, with the exception of those typical of a bullfighting ring, the law prohibiting bullfighting in the territory of Catalonia was approved , for which the Tarragona Provincial Council , the current owner of the arena, refused to remodel the old ones. The renovated square opened in 2010, with the installation of the mobile dome that covers the square, and expanding the capacity of the venue to 9,500 seats. Since then, the place has been used for corporate, sports, cultural events, human castles and shows of various kinds, except for those related to bullfighting . As of March 15, 2013, after a public tender, the management was awarded to a private company. Since its inauguration, the different editions of the Castells de Tarragona competition have been held , and in 2014 it was the venue for the final of the Spanish Handball Super Cup . There have also been concerts by artists such as Status Quo , Los Suaves , Hombres G , 11 Estopa , 12 Marea or Manuel Carrasco , 13 and on September 14, 2017 it hosted the first act of the campaign in favor of the yes to the referendum . of independence of Catalonia of 2017 , with the participation among others of Carles Puigdemont , Oriol Junqueras , Jordi Sànchez and Jordi Cuixart.
