In October 1962, the US discovered that the USSR was secretly deploying nuclear missiles in Cuba. The confrontation that followed came close to triggering a nuclear war between the two superpowers. It all started when a US reconnaissance plane photographed the missile sites that the USSR was secretly installing in Cuba. Washington reacted by imposing a naval blockade on the island. The Kremlin branded the measure as an act of aggression and said its ships would ignore the blockade. This episode of History Stories explores the Cuban Missile Crisis and the 13 days in which the decisions of a few men averted a nuclear war that at times seemed inevitable.
