January 28, 2014
Lecture by Gordon Bajnai, Former Prime Minister of Hungary and Leader of Together 2014 Electoral Alliance; with Victoria de Grazia, Blinken European Institute, Columbia University; Jan Svejnar, Center on Global Economic Governance, Columbia University; and Alan H. Timberlake, East Central European Center, Columbia University.
Ten years have passed since the accession of Hungary and seven other Central European states to the European Union. Their integration has been challenging, but largely successful. Yet the repercussions of the financial and economic crisis revealed the fragility of democracy and the rule of law in a number of these countries. What are the causes and consequences of rising nationalism and social populism throughout the region, and what political and economic remedies can be applied at national and European levels?
Organized by the Center on Global Economic Governance, Blinken European Institute, and East Central European Center.
