The church in St Cleer is dedicated to St Clarus, one of very few recognised English saints. He built the first church on the site in the 8th Century. After spurning the advances of a local chieftainess, he fled to France to live as a hermit. Unfortunately for St Clarus, the chieftainess couldn't take no for an answer, so had him hunted down and murdered.
The church itself was rebuilt in the 13th Century and the tower renovated in the 15th Century. It stands 97 feet high and can be seen for many miles all around the village.
