The Snite Museum of Art, the Creative Writing Program, the Department of English, and Spoken Word ND are co-hosting the 3rd Annual WHAM! BAM! POETRY SLAM! A reception will accompany the event between 5:00 and 7:30 p.m., and the slam will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m.
Poetry slams are not improvisational and they address serious issues, such as poverty, violence, racism, substance abuse, and economic exploitation, among other topics. The emphasis on audience participation also makes these events dynamic; attendees are encouraged to give feedback and judges will be picked at random from the audience that night.
Interested in participating as a poet? Poets must have three original poems prepared and can register for the competition starting February 23rd. The poetry slam will consist of three separate rounds, with each round decreasing in the number of competitors until a winner is declared from the finalists in round three. The poems must be original work on any subject and can be in any style. The use of props is strictly prohibited; only the performer’s body may be used to perform the poem. At the end of the evening, the emcee will announce a winner, and prizes (First Prize $100; Second Prize $25; Third Prize a selected copy from Action Books) will be awarded.
