Lexus Reveals Futuristic LF-ZC-Inspired Multisensory Art Installation at Miami Art Week

Lexus, renowned for its fusion of cutting-edge technology and sophisticated design, has ventured beyond the automobile world into the realm of art. During this year’s Miami Art & Design Week, the luxury automaker unveiled an awe-inspiring multisensory installation called Liminal Cycles, inspired by its all-electric LF-ZC concept car. This groundbreaking creation serves as a bold exploration of sustainability, design, performance, and personalization—key pillars of the Lexus brand.
In partnership with Crafting Plastics, a Bratislava-based research and design studio, Lexus has brought this artistic vision to life using 3D-printed bioplastics. The installation's centerpiece is a mesmerizing car-shaped sculpture, inspired by the sleek, futuristic silhouette of the LF-ZC. However, Liminal Cycles is far from a static display—it’s an interactive, living piece of art. Crafted from a proprietary bioplastic called Nuatan, the sculpture responds to environmental changes, shifting colors and even expanding and contracting as if it were breathing. Made from agricultural byproducts, sugars, starches, and bamboo fibers, Nuatan is biodegradable and free of microplastics, highlighting its sustainability.
This installation reflects Lexus' dedication to both art and innovation, as it engages visitors through all five senses—sight, sound, touch, smell, and environmental interaction—creating a profound experience that blurs the line between automotive design and artistic expression. With every touch or movement, elements of the sculpture shift, providing a tactile, sensory journey that brings Lexus’ vision for the future of mobility to life.
Beyond the central sculpture, Liminal Cycles includes several complementary pieces that explore various aspects of the car’s design philosophy. One notable element is a steering wheel-shaped sculpture, which emits sound when touched, simulating the driving experience in an auditory form. Another piece—a delicate lattice sculpture—reacts to ultraviolet light and wind, revealing the Lexus logo in an entrancing dance of motion and light. Additionally, a set of stools, inspired by car seat headrests, releases a subtle, Lexus-inspired fragrance when interacted with, adding another layer to the sensory experience.
Lexus explains that the project represents its vision for the future of vehicles. The installation incorporates ideas from the automaker’s Software Defined Vehicles concept, which seeks to integrate multi-sensory features directly into the driving experience. By blending art, technology, and sustainability, Lexus envisions a future where cars are dynamic, interactive environments that respond to a driver’s presence and needs, elevating the driving experience beyond traditional transportation.
The use of Nuatan and other sustainable materials demonstrates Lexus' commitment to environmental responsibility. The bioplastic’s ability to “breathe,” change color, and react to its surroundings while maintaining a minimal ecological footprint reflects the brand’s push for both luxury and sustainability in its designs.
Alongside the installation, Lexus has launched a limited-edition capsule collection of 26 collectible objects, created in collaboration with renowned designers such as Germane Barnes, Michael Bennett (Studio Kër), Suchi Reddy, and Tara Sakhi. These objects, displayed alongside Liminal Cycles, further emphasize Lexus’ vision of merging high-end design with innovative, sustainable materials.
For those fortunate enough to be in Miami, the Liminal Cycles installation is on display at the Institute of Contemporary Art’s sculpture garden until December 15.
