Video handed out by Thai rescuers on Tuesday (October 1) showed a burning school bus engulfed in flames on the outskirts of the capital Bangkok as more than 20 people were feared dead.

The burnt-out bus was carrying students and teachers from Wat Khao Phraya school back from a field trip north of the capital.

Police could not immediately confirm the number of injuries or deaths but Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters that about 23 people were still missing.

Sixteen students and three teachers were sent to a hospital for treatment, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said, adding that the cause of the incident was still being investigated.

The blaze was later extinguished. Footage of the aftermath showed fire trucks, police and rescue vehicles parked around the blackened vehicle.
