The spider monkey (Ateles species) is a large, agile primate native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. Known for their long limbs and prehensile tails, which act as a fifth limb, spider monkeys are adept climbers, spending most of their time in the trees. Their tails, sometimes longer than their bodies, are highly flexible and can support their entire weight, allowing them to dangle from branches or grasp objects.
Spider monkeys have slender bodies, with a small face and large eyes, and their fur ranges in color from black to brown to reddish. They live in social groups, often foraging for fruits, seeds, and flowers in the forest canopy. Vocal and intelligent, they use a variety of calls to communicate with each other, including loud barks and screeches to alert the group of danger.
