I travelled from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar on a budget - first by taking the bus from Beijing to Erenhot, then crossing the border in a jeep, then taking a train from Zamiin-Uud to Ulaanbaatar. It was easy and cost around $40 in total! If you want to take a train from China to Mongolia, this is a great alternative to the more expensive Trans-Manchurian Railway.
