When dealing with Sciatic, Disc herniations, disc bulges, nerve pain, or low back pain its important to know what can help you the most. One of the most frequent questions I get is about Heat vs. Ice for back pain.
Heat can be useful to help soothe muscles, promote blood flow, and help with chronic pain. Ice is good for acute injuries, and swelling, and great for pain reduction. When we speak about disc herniations or active nerve pain, it is implied that the low back is painful, irritated, and undergoing a flare-up.
For this reason, we do recommend most use of ice, however, you should not rely on ice or heat to fix your low back pain. You can use these modalities to help relax your body, as well as help with pain relief but if you want long-term relief, you should look at doing pain relief exercises and strengthening the affected areas.
