"Imagine being invited to a wedding of the century – one promised to include a magnificent banquet with the greatest food and the best company. If given the opportunity to attend, I am sure we all would without any hesitation. While this is what we would expect, this is not what happens in this week’s reading. In the gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the wedding banquet in which a King invites many to feast and celebrate his son’s wedding - yet the guests do not attend. The guests are disinterested and concern themselves instead with their daily lives, worrying about their farms, or their work. Though frustrated, the King extends the invitation again, gathering all those found on the streets of the kingdom, bad and good alike, inviting them to wear the wedding garment and partake in the feast.
As you have probably gathered, this wedding banquet represents the kingdom of heaven and we are the guests who fail to accept God’s invitation. Through this parable, we see God’s mercy and his willingness to invite all into his kingdom even if we reject him at first.
For me, this parable is an important reminder to accept God’s love and acknowledge the gift of our salvation. As we all struggle through midterms, papers, and interviews, it is easy for us to be like the guests at the banquet who are too distracted and disinterred to realize the magnitude of the feast God has prepared for us. Instead of turning away or forgetting about God in these times of stress and anxiety, let us instead accept his invitation and see him as a source of light that shines through the darkness we may be experiencing."
