First appearing officially in the Fiend Folio (1981) the Slaadi are unique to Dungeons and Dragons, having no basis in any folk lore, but have seen a lot of development through the various editions of the game. The lore of the Spawning Stone in the Fifth edition monster manual is particularly interesting and I recommend reading it.
