Today, Nordic noir is at the forefront of international mystery
fiction. Nordic noir —which refers to crime fiction authored
by writers living and working in Sweden, Norway, Denmark,
Iceland, and Finland—has something for every fan of the genre,
from police procedurals to private-eye stories. The boom in Nordic
noir is a notable example of a phenomenon we’ve discussed in
previous lectures: the ability of mystery and suspense fiction writers
to combine core features of the genre with local innovations. In this
sense, the success of Nordic noir mirrors the success of the genre as
a whole.
