In an upcoming episode of the PBS series Great Decisions, experts and senior officials weigh in on trends that led to Turkey's 2016 coup crisis and its ongoing struggles to balance democratic values, the war in Syria, and conflicts with Kurds at home and next door. To discuss this episode, The Washington Institute is pleased to host a special advance screening with PBS producers MacDara King and David Heidelberger; they will be joined by Lisel Hintz and Soner Cagaptay, who are featured in the episode.
MacDara King is executive producer of the Great Decisions series and chief information officer of the Foreign Policy Association. He has produced over one hundred programs for broadcast on public television.
David Heidelberger is an Emmy-nominated producer and supervising editor of the series. He has also edited television programs and commercials that have been seen across the United States and internationally.
Lisel Hintz is an assistant professor of international relations and European studies at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies. She has written widely on the Kurdish question, Turkey's relations with Syria, and the rise of "Ottoman Islamism."
Soner Cagaptay is the Beyer Family Fellow and director of the Turkish Research Program at The Washington Institute. His numerous publications include the 2017 book The New Sultan: Erdogan and the Crisis of Modern Turkey.
