The reaction between magnesium metalturnings and copper(II) oxide is spectacular. It can be explosive with magnesium powder. Start with rice grain amounts. Magnesium is a powerful reducing agent and reduces copper 2+ ions to copper metal while it is reduced to magnesium 2+ ions. Oxide 2- ions are spectator ions and do not take part in the reaction.
