The String Quartet No. 2 was written in 1881 by Alexander Borodin. It was dedicated to his wife as a remembrance of their courtship in Heidelberg, Germany, where they met for the first time. The third movement (out of four movements) is the Nocturne, an Andante in A major. At the beginning of this movement, Borodin instructs the musician who plays the melody: 'cantabile ed espressivo,' meaning 'singing with expression.'
This is an arrangement for chamber orchestra.
