Spanish conservatives had been expecting a victory in national elections held in recent days, with many wondering if Spain would see its first far-right representation in parliament since the country's return to democracy after General Franco's death in 1975.
The conservative Spanish Popular Party have claimed victory in the election but doesn’t have enough seats to form a government.
Spain is currently helmed by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who leads the Socialist Workers Party and the government with the support of other parties.
Neither the PP nor the SWP have enough votes for a majority, while their potential coalition partners - the far-right Vox party and far-left Sumar alliance - failed to make up the numbers.
The result has left many surprised, and leaves those who have been elected with three months to attempt to break the impasse between the right and the left, and form a government.
