On December 31, 2023, the Sun produced a major X5.0 solar flare, the strongest one since 2017. This was a huge explosion of radiation and plasma from the Sun’s surface, caused by the twisting and breaking of its magnetic fields. The flare also sent a coronal mass ejection, or CME, flying towards Earth, which arrived on January 2, 2024. This was a big cloud of plasma and magnetic fields that can interact with Earth’s magnetic field and cause a geomagnetic storm. This can have both good and bad effects, such as auroras, power outages, and navigation errors. In this video, we will explore what happened, why it happened, and what it means for us. We will also learn some fascinating facts about the Sun, its cycles, and its influence on our planet and solar system.
