"The importance of the training really shows, demonstrates our continued partnership and commitment to the country of Georgia. Both from a Marine corps, as you know, your Georgian battalions and us we fight alongside together in Afghanistan and our partnership is very deep."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) John Bass, US ambassador to Georgia:
"From my perspective, I don't think this training is provocative. It's consistent with past training activities. It's focused on counter-insurgency missions and on smaller unit tactics. It's very limited in scale, and again it fits well within the context of our ongoing bilateral defence cooperation, which is focused on improving Georgia's abilities, among other things, to appropriately defend the country."

STORYLINE:
Georgian and US military units displayed their skills in counter-insurgency operations at the Vaziani military base in Georgia on Tuesday.
The event showcased the tactics acquired during a joint US-Georgian exercise known as Agile Spirit 2012 which began on March 10.
Altogether 750 soldiers from both countries took part in the training.
The joint military exercises have drawn criticism from Russia.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called it a provocative and unhelpful move in already unstable region.
But the US ambassador to Georgia, John Bass, said the military training was "consistent with past training activities" and was not intended to provoke unrest.
"It fits well within the context of our ongoing bilateral defence cooperation, which is focused on improving Georgia's abilities, among other things, to appropriately defend the country," Bass said.
