The Journey of RV Shakers
Nanthika N bonding with Jason Jacob (Intellectual Disability)
Our student, Nanthika, was positive and happy on her way to the first meeting. However, she faced challenges interacting with her partner, Jason Jacob, who has an intellectual disability.
Jason repeatedly asked the same questions and had difficulty remembering and recollecting the dance steps. We practiced multiple times and modified the steps to better suit his needs.
Our teacher, Ms. Anu Madhavan, crafted simple steps that he could perform. Nanthika exhibited great patience, showing the steps and ensuring her partner felt comfortable.
For the final video shoot, Jason could not come to our school. Therefore, we visited SKB Vidyashram again. We found that he was at the same level as when we first met him.
We changed the song and steps, and despite his difficulties in talking and expressing his feelings, Jason continued to smile and was ready to cooperate.
While his condition made it tough for him, these kinds of initiatives and exposure will undoubtedly help him develop his skills. When we look at the final video, his happy face makes all the difference in our hearts. Steps or perfection are not even the question.
This journey has taught us profound lessons in patience, adaptability, and the beauty of human connection. It has shown us that success is not defined by perfection, but by the joy and growth experienced along the way.
We are incredibly proud of our students for their compassion and dedication, and we are grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a meaningful and transformative experience.
