Major Road Projects Victoria engaged McConnell Dowell to design and construct Stage 3 of the Echuca-Moama Bridge Project, a long-awaited second crossing over the Murray and Campaspe rivers to better connect Echuca in Victoria and Moama in New South Wales. The project included earth embankments, flood relief bridges on adjacent floodplains and a new scenic shared use path. The project, constructed across state borders, faced extensive COVID-19 related challenges with border closures and public health orders for the two states, adding a very different level of complexity and requiring a very different risk management delivery approach. Despite disruption, efficient collaboration between the constructor, client, and stakeholders, ensured the road was opened to traffic ahead of schedule, and under budget. The new bridge has boosted travel, tourism, and the local economy, improving liveability and connectedness between states and removed approximately 10,000 vehicles per day from local roads.
